In an effort to at least try to make good on my goal of boosting my annual post count, I have finally shaken off the shackles of procrastination. Maybe it’s the sunshine today, or the fact that we’re significantly past the winter solstice, but I feel ready to tackle things. Of particular note was yesterday’s mental health restoration exercise, in which I gave myself some psychological breathing room and got some lingering things off my to do list that were continually stressing me out.
I also fully indulged in a bit of dopamine-mining by digging into Dredge and playing a solid few hours of a non-casual game. After finishing all of Widow’s Bay season 1, it felt tonally apt. I am enjoying both the creepiness and the open-world / explorative nature of the game. Plus, just cruising around on my little boat is definitely my kind of vibe.
I also finished the latest Murderbot. I sparkily-heart-sigil you, Murderbot.
Another thing that has helped my brains out is that I was finally able to sit down with a new psychologist and carry on with some of the unpacking I had been doing late last year. That has galvanised me to move ahead with new plans which I will probably post about later.
If you had asked me 2-3 weeks ago how I was handling things, I probably would have replied, “abysmally.” It’s funny how a day off and an hour’s chat with the right person can turn that a complete 180º around.
Tomorrow we are gonna get our nerd on and go to Winterfest. I really hope it will be fun, I’ve been intrigued to go for a while now. The kiddos seem keen, and it feels like there’s something for everyone. We all just need a day out of our own personal ruts.
Next week kicks off the school holidays, which were always stressful when I was a pre-school and early school parent. These days it’s nice to just avoid having to heard cats in the morning, and as almost-thirteen-year-olds, my kids are fairly decent at keeping themselves entertained, and we don’t have to escort them everywhere.
Oh, and happy Fourth of July? I guess? I hope the US can collectively do some serious introspection on the current state of play and the significance of what a bunch of landed white dudes were trying to accomplish back in 1776, flawed as their perspective may seem these days. I don’t have a lot of optimism that any great epiphanies will happen there, but it doesn’t hurt to be hopeful.
